LIFE GUARD/ WATER FRONT DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Staff Director, Camp Director and/or Waterfront Director

  1. Desired Qualifications
    1. Water Front Directors MUST have Certification in Open Water Safety Instruction
    2. Must Have current life guarding certification    CPR/AED etc. is also a plus
    3. Prepared mentally, physically, and spiritually
    4. Desire to work with Children and Youth of all ages
    5. Ability to work with and relate to one’s peer group
    6. Ability to accept guidance and supervision
    7. Good Character and Integrity
    8. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
    9. At least 18 years of age
  2. General Responsibility:  To keep campers and staff alert to safety issues, keep the campers and staff safe on the waterfront and beach, and to be a role model for campers in proper conduct on an off the waterfront.
  3. Specific Responsibilities:
    1. Conduct daily check of equipment in area for safety, cleanliness, and repair
    2. Write camper names on buddy tags on Sundays of camp weeks
    3. Be on duty when waterfront or beach is open and be capable of performing lifesaving duties.
    4. Rotate with other guards to supervise waterfront or beach, boats, and any other areas of concern
    5. The guard should always be ready to go into the water, have proper equipment for lifesaving at hand.
    6. Waterfront Director will give swim tests to all persons a the beginning of each camp session with the assistance of the counseling staff.  Account for the campers performances on the master list and with swim bracelets or buddy tags use the following system.
      1. Green = Swimmer       any area of swimming
      2. Yellow = Marginal Swimmer (watch carefully) nothing past the docks
      3. Red = non swimmer       (shallow section only)
    7. Other duties as assigned

*work with counselors to assign them to waterfront duty as needed for observers.  Be flexible with last minute changes in schedule.  Keep shallow water area clean and sand raked and free of debris.  Keep trash picked up and keep the first aid supply box stocked and at the beach or waterfront.  Advise the Director or Staff Director or Health Officer of any problems immediately!
